What Does SDET Bursary Cover?

Students from South Deep Mine’s host and labor-sending areas will be awarded bursaries for Diploma and Degree studies in any field, whether technical or or non-technical. The bursary will cover various expenses, including full tuition fees, textbooks, and equipment for specialized qualifications like architecture, dentistry, and engineering (assessed on a case-by-case basis). It also includes accommodation (both on-campus and off-campus), a laptop allowance, and a monthly stipend for 10 months.

Furthermore, students receiving the BURSARY may get extra HELP with their personal growth, career guidance, and academic support. However, additional tutoring will only be provided if deemed necessary by the SDET Trustees, based on individual needs. In addition, students who receive the bursary will be encouraged to spend one week each year during volunteer work or an internship in their community.

The goal is to help them develop practical skills and experience that will prepare them for the workforce after graduation. Lastly, students who do not pass any modules will be responsible for covering the cost of repeating them.

Who Qualifies For the South Deep Education Trust (SDET) Bursary?

SDET has set certain requirements for its bursary program to ensure that applicants meet the necessary for financial support and academic success. Note that if you do not meet all the requirements, your application will not be considered. The following are the qualification criteria for the SDET Bursary:

  • Applicants’ total household income must not exceed R350,000 per year.
  • You must live in one of the South Deep host communities or surrounding areas (Westonaria, Bekkersdal, Poortjie, Simunye), or in a South Deep Labour Sending Area (KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo).
  • Applicants can’t be a dependent on Gold Field employee, anyone from its division or partner companies or a dependent of Trustee of the South Deep Education and Community Trusts.
  • You must either be currently in Matric (2014) or have already completed it.
  • Applicants must either be studying or planning to study for a Diploma or Degree in any technical or non-technical field.
  • You must either be studying or have been provisionally accepted to study at a public university or public TVET college in South Africa in 2025.
  • Applicants must not be receiving any other bursaries, scholarships, or financial assistance for their tertiary studies.
  • If you are currently in Matric, you must have a minimum overall average of 75% (not including Life Orientation) in your final National Senior Certificate.
  • If you are currently studying and applying for this bursary, for the first time, you must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in your most recent year of study.
  • If you are a returning SDET Bursary applicant, you must have passed your most recent year of study.
