What Fields and Expenses are Covered by the SAAFoST Bursary?
SAAFoST is offering three types of bursaries for studies in the Food Science and Technology fields listed below:
- SAAFoST Matriculant Bursary: This is for the Matric students who plan to study full-time for their first undergraduate degree or diploma in Food Science and Technology.
- SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary: This is for students enrolled in full-time studies for their first undergraduate degree or diploma in Food Science and Technology.
- SAAFoST Part Time Bursary for Members: This is for paid-up SAAFoST members pursuing part-time studies towards a BSc Hons or BTech qualification in Food Science and Technology.
The SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary will be awarded based on three main factors: academic excellence, employment equity, and demonstrated potential. Note that the bursary will cover only tuition fees ( as outlined by the school’s fee statement) up to a maximum amount of R 40,000 per year. The bursary will continue to cover these fees until the student completes their degree or diploma.
The bursary will be paid directly to the school in two installments. The second payment will be made if the student’s first-semester results are good.
Who Qualifies for the SAAFoST Bursary Program?
Before submitting the application, applicants must go over the eligibility criteria and make sure they meet all the requirements. If any applicant fails to satisfy the requirements, their application will not be considered. The following are the SAAFoST Bursary eligibility requirements:
- You need to be a South African citizen or a permanent resident.
- You should have lived in South Africa for at least 3 years before applying.
- Applicant must have finished Matric.
- You must be a full-time student working towards your first degree or diploma in Food Science and Technology.
- Applicant need to be going into their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of studies in 2025.
- You must be enrolled at an accredited and recognized university or college in South Africa.
- You need to have been an SAAFoST member for at least 12 months before applying for the bursary.
- You must be able to finish your studies within the set time limits; up to 3 years for a Bachelor’s Degree, 4 years for a Higher Diploma, and 4 years for Undergraduate Studies (including up to BSc Hons).
- Undergraduate students with good grades or strong potential will be prioritized.

Here’s how you can apply for the bursary program:
- First of all, download the SAAFoST Bursary application form for undergraduate students.
- After downloading it, fill it out using authentic and up-to-date details.
- Next, prepare clear copies of the following documents:
- certified copy of ID Documents or a passport.
- A passport-sized photo showing only your head and shoulders.
- A certified copy of your latest academic results from your tertiary studies.
- Certified copy of your latest Matric result.
- Proof that you are registered at a tertiary institution for the 2025 academic year (must be on the institution’s letterhead).
- A personal statement (explaining how your education and training in food science and technology will positively impact the scientific community and your own life, a maximum of 1 A4 page).
- A reference letter with contact details, written by someone from your school who knows you in a learning context.
