Originating in 2006, the Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT) was created to invest in the growth and development of the communities where SIOC (PTY) LTD carries out its operations. SIOC conducts its operations across several municipal areas in the Northern Cape, as well as one municipality in the Limpopo province.

SIOC-CDT was established by Sishen Ore Company (SIOC), which is owned by Kumba Iron Ore (KIO). SIOC-CDT has given hundreds of bursaries to deserving underprivileged students from its communities to help them study at universities and colleges across South Africa.

What Does SIOC-CDT Bursary Cover?

Bursaries will be granted to students from SIOC-CDT ‘s beneficiary communities in the Northern Cape and Limpopo for studies in any field. However, the fields listed below will be prioritized:

Agriculture (Specialization):

• Veterinarian / Live Stock Product Analyst/ Environmental Officer/ Agricultural Economist / Agricultural Engineer/ Food Technologist/ Food Technician

Business Management and Economists (Specialization):

• Accounting/ Economics/ Auditing and Tax/ Actuarial Science/ Statistics and Mathematics/ Project Management

Education (Specialization):

• BEd. FET Mathematics/ BEd. FET Physics Science/ BEd. Natural Sciences/ Economic and Management Science/ BEd. Foundation Phase/ BEd. Language/ BEd. Special Needs

Engineering and Science (Specialization):

• Quantity Surveying/ Civil Engineering/ Architecture/ Geology/ Electrical Engineering/ Town Planning/ Environmental Health

Health and Clinical-Related Sciences (Specialization):

• MBChB/ Pharmacy/ Dentistry/ Advanced EMS/ Nursing/ Chemical, Biological, Medical Lab Sciences/ Biochemistry

Information Technology (Specialization):

Who is Eligible for the SIOC-CDT Bursary?

Before submitting your application, applicants must satisfy the requirements. If any applicant fails to satisfy the requirements, their application will not be considered. The following are the SIOC-CDT Bursary eligibility requirements:

• Applicant must be a South African citizen.
• You must be 35 years old or younger on the closing date.
• You must live in or come from SIOC-CDT beneficiary communities:
  • Gamagara Local Municipality (Norther Cape)
  • Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality (Northern Cape)
  • Tsantsabane Local Municipality (Northern Cape)
  • Joe Morolong Local Municipality (Northern Cape) or
  • Thabazimbi Local Municipality (Limpopo)
• You must be either currently in Matric or have already completed it.
• You must be studying or planning to study either part-time or full-time.
• You must be studying or planning to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree qualification in one of the mentioned fields (other fields not listed may be considered for funding).
• You must have a minimum overall average of 65% in your most recent academic results.
• The applicant must have been accepted or provisionally accepted to study at a recognized public institution (University, University of Technology, TVET, or FET College) in South Africa for 2025.
• You must need financial help, with a household income of less than R600,000 per year (before deductions).
• Students with disabilities are welcome to apply.

How Do I Apply for the SIOC-CDT Bursary?

  • Three recent months’ back statements from your parents or guardians.
  • Proof of residence, such as rates and taxes bill, water, and electricity account, a letter from your landlord, or an affidavit from your local councillor.
  • If applicable, a medical note describing the type of disability.
